Betway fined £11.6m for VIP failings

Betway will pay a Gambling Commission fine of £11.6m ($14.8m) after being found guilty of a series of failings in relation to its VIP customers.

In an investigation into the operator’s high-spending customers, the Gambling Commission found multiple cases of “social responsibility and money laundering failings.”

In one case, Betway failed to carry out social responsibility interactions with a customer who deposited and lost £187,000 in two days.

In a second instance, the operator did not carry out adequate source of funds checks on a VIP customer who deposited over £8m and lost over £4m in a four-year period.

Due to a lack of affordability and source of funds checks, the Gambling Commission calculated Betway had allowed £5.8m to flow through the business “which has been found, or could reasonably be suspected to be, the proceeds of crime.”

In addition to its £11.6m fine, Betway must implement measures to ensure improvements are made.

Richard Watson, Executive Director of the Gambling Commission, said: “The actions of Betway suggest there was little regard for the welfare of its VIP customers or the impact on those around them.

“We have set tight deadlines for when we expect to see progress and if we do not see the right results then we will have no choice but to take further action. This case highlights again why progress needs to be made.”

When Gambling Insider contacted Betway for comment, CEO Anthony Werkman said: “Betway takes full responsibility for the small number of historic cases which have led to this settlement. We have fully cooperated with the investigation and will take further proactive steps to ensure all recommendations and findings are implemented.

“As a responsible, licensed operator, extensive work has and will continue to be undertaken to greatly enhance our compliance systems, policies and processes. We have disbanded our VIP program in recognition that tighter controls were needed to ensure our customers were using our services responsibly.

“Betway has no interest in profiting from any stolen funds wagered on its sites. Where we establish stolen funds have been used, we will ensure the victim is fully reimbursed. For all other cases, donations are made to charities focused on socially responsible initiatives.”

Meet the Professor in Pragmatic Play’s latest slot

Pragmatic Play, a leading content provider to the gaming industry, has released yet another thrilling creation, The Wild Machine.

Pragmatic Play’s exciting new title features a 5×5 grid with four unique wild machines at four points of the reels, which can randomly expand into wilds either across or down the board, creating massive win potential.

The game’s bonus feature takes the form of a ‘Wonder Wheel’, where players can be awarded a cash value or trigger the free spins mode. With two modes, the Gold Foundry or Diamond Forge spins, players are given an option to pick their chosen method. The Wild Machine’s bonus rounds give players a huge opportunity to win life-changing amounts.

Melissa Summerfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Pragmatic Play, said: “The Wild Machine is an exhilarating new addition to the Pragmatic Play portfolio. With its quirky theme and fun gameplay, combined with random-trigger features and a lucrative bonus round, The Wild Machine will be manufacturing fantastic Pragmatic Play slot experiences for fans worldwide.”

The Wild Machine is the latest title in Pragmatic Play’s growing slot portfolio, with the provider releasing four new titles a month, joining an already established portfolio of award-winning titles including Wolf Gold, John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure, and Sweet Bonanza.

The provider’s entire portfolio of video slots, bingo, and other games is available to its operator partners via one single API.

We see much more growth coming from the UK

Entering the UK is an important step to help to boost growth for Pragmatic Play, according to its Vice President.

Through a partnership with platform provider SkillOnNet, the supplier launched its live casino in the UK for the first time in January.

And despite several brands being forced away from the market in recent months due to tightening regulation, Vice President Lena Yasir told Gambling Insider the UK is a jurisdiction Pragmatic Play has been following for some time, tailoring its product to break into the market.

She said: “The UK is a really big market in the gaming industry. For us it’s a market we’ve been very interested in exploring, which is why we’ve paid huge focus and attention to making sure that all our products are compliant for the UK market.

“We’ve seen really good growth in the UK, both in slots and now in live casino since our product has been certified there. We’re just starting, but we see much more growth coming from the UK.”

In terms of standing out in a crowded market, Yasir is adamant innovation and speeding up game-time is crucial, which has led to several new products in the past few months.

This includes an Auto-Stand feature for live blackjack, decreasing the duration of the game by 25%, and Bingo Blast, cutting down game time until the final 20 seconds.

She said: “Innovation is key, you need to stand out. It’s a very competitive market and everyone is almost offering the same thing. If you’re not innovative, if you don’t think outside the box, it’s going to be very hard to attract new clients and get your current clients to push your content.

“With all our products, we want to make sure our product is engaging, exciting and immersive; and has a different unique touch to it to make it stand out.

“Our blackjack feature is quite unique in the market and now we can say we have the fastest blackjack game in the market right now.”

While Yasir said entering into more regulated markets is something Pragmatic Play is keeping an eye on, with this strategy comes the increased challenge of adhering to regulation.

She said: “The main challenge we and everyone has is the regulations that are put in place, especially with the UK and Swedish regulations.

“These are obviously challenges for every game provider to make sure they’re on top of things, have a good compliance team to make sure their requests go through; so once it’s regulated we don’t lose any traffic and make sure we go in compliant with our products and with our full portfolio.

“We’re going into South America and keeping an eye on Europe but regulated markets are our main focus. Any regulated market that is on the horizon, we are there investigating and making sure we’re ready for it.”

New dates for CasinoBeats Malta and Betting on Sports America

SBC Events has announced that it has delayed two of its international gambling conferences as the global situation around the COVID-19 outbreak continues to develop.

CasinoBeats Malta, the dedicated gaming conference and exhibition organised by SBC Events, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Malta will now be held on 22-24 June 2020. Betting on Sports America at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey, has been moved to 1-3 December 2020.

A statement by SBC Events said: “While the global COVID-19 situation evolves and the official advice and restrictions concerning travel and public gatherings continue to change, we feel we have no alternative but to postpone both events until later in the year.

“The changing situation and the fact that an increasing number of industry organisations are introducing their own travel bans for staff, means that both CasinoBeats Malta and Betting on Sports America would have been severely impacted had we not made the decision to postpone them until later in the year.”

All tickets will be transferred to the new date automatically. Delegates should contact SBC Events at [email protected] with any questions.

The dates for Betting on Sports Europe, being held at Stamford Bridge in London on 2-4 June 2020, currently remain in place while the global situation develops.

ASA bans two Profit Accumulator advertisements

Two advertisements posted on Instragram by Profit Accumulator have been deemed irresponsible and banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Profit Accumulator is a paid-for service that provides its members with information on promotional offers and directs them to specific bets for the purpose of matched betting.

The first advertisement featured the text “COLOSSAL WIN 2,380.50” alongside the caption “Absolutely amazing win from one of our members 12 minutes ago.”

The post’s hashtags were “#makemoney #income #makemoneyfromhome #extraincome #students #sahm #extramoney.”

In the second banned advertisement, Profit Accumulator posted a review, which said: “In one month I have gone from a person struggling to stay afloat who is worrying about their MOT, bills etc to completely flipping my financial position.

“Could not have got to this position without match betting, and without the guidance of Profit Accumulator.”

The complainant believed the advertisements suggested matched betting could be a way to achieve financial security.

Although the ASA acknowledged Profit Accumulator was not itself a gambling company, it concluded the purpose of the service was to facilitate gambling.

With this in mind, the ASA ruled that the advertisements must not appear again in their current form and advised Profit Accumulator not to imply matched betting could be a solution to financial concerns.

US racehorse doping scheme leads to 27 arrests

A number of racehorse trainers, veterinarians and drug distributors have been arrested in the US with charges related to the illegal drugging of racehorses.

One of the 27 people arrested in relation to the accusations is Jason Servis, trainer of Maximum Security, who won the £20m ($26m) Saudi Cup last month, the world’s richest horserace.

According to federal indictments related to the case, Servis and the 26 other defendants were involved in a scheme to manufacture and distribute adulterated and misbranded drugs to secretly administer to racehorses.

Servis, who entered horses in more than 1,000 races from 2018 to Feb 2020, is accused of doping Maximum Security and “virtually all of the racehorses under his control.”

The defendants are accused of administering horses with performance-enhancing drugs, such as blood builders, pain shots, bronchodilators and ‘red acid.’

William Sweeney Jr, Assistant Director of the FBI’S New York Office, said these substances led to a number of negative consequences for the horses, including: “cardiac issues, over-exertion leading to leg fractures, increased risk of injury, and in some cases death.”

The case has been described by Geoffrey Berman, the US Attorney for Manhattan, as the most far-reaching prosecution of racehorse doping in the history of the Department of Justice.
